How to Maintain Jewelry- Storing & Cleaning!

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

There is no doubt that every one of us jewelry lovers has wondered “What are some of the best ways to maintain our jewelry?” Whether your pieces are fine or fashion, you are investing in your look and style. Here are some tips to maintain the look and usage of jewelry that can be helpful to you.

Storing Your Jewelry

When storing jewelry it is best to keep jewelry in a lined felt or fabric box. Multiple level jewelry boxes with drawers and dividers are ideal for storing expensive jewelry and protecting it from dust. It is important that all items are stored separately, as this method keeps items from rubbing and scratching against each other. Jewelry is best stored at room temperature, in a dry dark location away from sunlight. The fabric or felt lining can absorb moisture to prevent jewelry pieces from tarnishing and discoloration. For larger pieces of jewelry you may want to store separate in a lined pouch or wrap each piece in a cloth to prevent exposure to air. It is important to hang necklaces vertically as this prevents kinking and knotting. As jewelry lovers some of us even choose to create our own dIY projects for storing jewelry. This can be a good idea, just keep in mind the interior lining, space for each piece, and the proper lid, drawer, or door coverage as we want to keep these jewelry pieces away from sunlight. Vacuuming out your jewelry box and making sure your storage is clean and fresh is also a good tip to remember.

Cleaning Your Jewelry

Having your fine jewelry professionally cleaned by your jeweler every six months is best if you wear your pieces quite often. At home it is good to buff jewelry with a dry cloth after each use before storing away. For fashion jewelry you can use a toothbrush or q-tip and toothpaste to clean. Squeeze a small amount of toothpaste on to your discolored or tarnished piece of jewelry and smudge it with one finger. Once the jewelry has a thin coating, brush clean, and then work into the crevices with the toothbrush. This is a great option because the slightly gritty texture of the toothpaste works hard to remove even the toughest dirt. Rinse with cool water and buff dry with a clean cloth.
