What is Rhodium Plating?

electroplating is used on jewelry to give a surface that will resist against tarnishing and scratches.

The rhodium provides a white reflecting appearance.

Rhodium plating can majority be found on white gold. What jewelers call white gold today is an alloy mixture of gold and a white metal, metals normally which are other members of the platinum family. These metals are usually nickel, silver, or palladium. Metals that are known as white are actually gray in color, so white gold has a yellowish cast. The higher the karat weight, the more gold there is in the alloy, the more yellow the cast appears. Wearer’s of white gold look for a bright white look, a very thin layer of rhodium electroplating is used to create the jewelry with this type of shine. White gold with rhodium plating tends to keep jewelry looking good longer. While rhodium plating is beneficial for jewelry use, it can require maintenance and re-plating over time. Ultimately, rhodium plating adds attractive luster sheen and soft glow of light reflection to jewelry, with the added bonus of being more resistant to scratches and tarnishing.
